Job Summary
The External Relations Liaison acts as a liaison between Student Affairs and all externally facing units (Philanthropy & Alumni Engagement, Government Relations, Community Engagement, Protocol & Special Events, and Communications & Marketing, etc.). Being embedded in Student Affairs will allow this position to build a rapport with Student Affairs staff and current students. This position will be responsible for mentoring students to create further success with the AU Mascot program and creating the AU student experience into mission critical events for the Division of External Relations. This position will highlight the student experience to external audiences and ensure that students are prepared to represent the institution broadly at key events. This position will act as a brand ambassador for the institution to increase community engagement and grow relationships among external constituents. This position will also lead the creation and continuation of Augusta University's spirit and traditions (mascot, signature icon, alma mater, etc.).
Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
ADMINISTRATIVE: With a dotted line to Student Affairs, serving as liaison between Student Affairs, Athletics, and the Office of External Relations to facilitate student appearances at externally facing events (Capitol Day, Alumni Events, President's Summer Tour, FanFest, Commencement, Legislative Tours, among others.). Attends meetings with Student Affairs leaders and maintains strong relationships across the campus community.
ENGAGEMENT LEADER: Prioritizes student engagement with external audiences to highlight the student experience and promote academic programming. Guides students in preparing remarks and presentations aimed at external audiences. Prepares communication for students and constituents to include remarks, agendas, proposals, etc.
GENERAL DUTIES: Serves as the main POC for student ambassadors to better capture the AU student experience within the Division of External Relations for mission critical VIP visits, tours, and other initiatives. Leads the creation and continuation of Augusta University traditions (to include the mascot, arsenal bell, alma mater, etc.) and identifies opportunities to expand these traditions. Aids in recruitment, retention, and success of students in the Spirit & Traditions program to include mascot and mascot handlers. Supports student academic responsibilities, guidance, and required study hours when necessary for the success of the student.
AUGUSTUS MANAGEMENT: Manages the schedule of mascot appearances to prioritize events as listed in the mascot guidelines and best practices. Supervises student assistants responsible for escorting the mascot at all appearances. Travels with students and student assistants as needed to facilitate successful appearances. Directs the cleaning and upkeep of the mascot costume and affiliated accessories. Manages creation and supply of dedicated Augustus promotional items that are unique to Augustus appearances. Coordinates with the Business Operations Manager regarding supply orders and maintenance.
BRAND AMBASSADOR: Acts as a brand ambassador aligning the mascot and institutional traditions with the use of Augusta University brand guidelines for all marketing efforts and public appearances. Creates student and mascot programming focused on Town and Gown initiatives to expand the Augusta University brand and grow community relationships (potential to create funding stream) Expands the mascot program to create a presence in the community and enhance brand recognition. Supervises community outreach/ appearances and ensures all compliance requirements are met.
OTHER DUTIES: Perform all other job-related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in education, public relations, or related field with a minimum of three years related experience. Previous experience working with a mascot required.
Preferred Qualifications
Master's degree from an accredited college or university with five or more years of experience. Understanding of the strategic mission of Augusta University. Strong written and oral communication skills required. Strong understanding of Student Affairs. Experience managing students, student assistants, and graduate assistants. Robust relationships across campus preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Must be a problem solver who works quickly, a team-player willing to support staff on both small and large projects, good judgement to handle sensitive information and high priority tasks and can think critically to develop creative solutions on new challenges. Demonstrated ability to work across cross-functional teams with time sensitive deadlines and discretion is critical. Must be proficient in writing, storytelling, media relations, and content strategy. Ability to maintain confidentiality, detail oriented. Excellent Interpersonal, organizational, verbal/written communication skills. Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases.
Shift/Salary/Benefits
Pay Band: B11
Salary Minimum: $56,600
Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position
