College/Department Information
Pathology sits at the cusp of basic and clinical sciences. This unique position allows the Medical College of Georgia Department of Pathology to contribute in an important and meaningful manner to clinical care through the provision of timely and accurate diagnoses as well as laboratory testing results. At the same time, investigative approaches within the department seek to further define our understanding of disease processes, paving the way for therapeutic interventions.
The Department embraces the tripartite mission of the Medical College of Georgia i.e. clinical service, education, and research. The Department of Pathology (Anatomic and Clinical Pathology) has 22 clinical faculty, including 2 members based at the Athens Campus, and 6 research faculty. Clinical services are delivered primarily to AU Medical Center's 478 bed adult hospital and the 154 bed Children's Hospital of Georgia.
The Department also operates Georgia Esoteric Molecular Laboratory, an independently licensed and CLIA certified reference laboratory, which provides esoteric molecular testing and pathology consultation services for hospitals and physicians. Approximately 1.3 million clinical laboratory procedures and 13,500 surgical specimens are processed annually. With specialty trained experts in almost every area of anatomic and clinical pathology, we provide diagnostic and consultative services, facilitating key clinical decisions.
Job Summary
Perform advanced administrative and technical work in support of research initiatives in an assigned laboratory or clinical research unit. Participates in research data collection and documentation within FDA guidelines and research institute protocols; develops and evaluates new research techniques and procedures. Performs a variety of complex chemical, biological, cytological, microscopic, histological, surgical, clinical and/or dissection procedures.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities to include but not limited to:
Project planning and development
Participate in project planning and development of research protocols to insure adherence to accept scientific research principles, compliance with human assurance and the FDA.
Participate in Examines for research purposes
Participate in physical examination, testing, and/or treatment of study patients for research purposes, read and record vital signs, obtain tissue and/or fluid samples for further testing, document study specific procedures and outcomes in study patient's medical record.
Advise principal investigators
Advise principal investigators, post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, and other research personnel on research techniques, procedures, and other technological aspects of research activities.
Administrative duties
May perform a variety of administrative duties such as ordering equipment and supplies; responsible for maintenance of equipment schedules, record keeping, clean-up, etc.

Supervise and Coordinate
Supervise and coordinate activities of students, graduate assistants and other employees engaged in research activities and/or related laboratory work.
Teach and participate in complex issues
Teach and participate in complex bacteriological, chemical, and/or radio-chemical qualitative and quantitative analysis, macro- and micro-serological, histological, and cell culture procedures.
Technical Support
Calibrate, troubleshoot, repair, and operate electron microscopes, computer-linked analytical equipment, dedicated computers, and other complex scientific equipment; instructs others in operation of equipment.
Coordinate and participate
Coordinate and participate in research of scientific literature; summarize and evaluate findings; develops derivative applications of techniques developed by own research activities or reported by other research projects.
Analyze results of research experiments
Analyze results of research experiments and procedures using manual or computer techniques; may develop special computer program to facilitate analysis.
Compose articles
Compose articles for publication in scientific journals; reviews articles prepared by others.
Perform other duties
Perform other related duties incidental to work described herein.
Required Qualifications
Master's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and experience in research, basic science or clinical laboratory particularly clinical trial research.
OR
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and a minimum of three years' research and/or clinical experience.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
KNOWLEDGE
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint) and other computer software/databases.
SKILLS
Excellent customer service, interpersonal, multi-tasking, organizational and verbal/written communication skills.
ABILITIES
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously.
Ability to meet deadlines despite often interruptions.
Ability to keep accurate records and make independent decisions.
Shift/Salary/Benefits
Shift: Days; Monday - Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required).
Pay Band: B8
Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position.
