Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Program Director, Advising Professional Development and Training is part of a collaborative team promoting student enrollment, persistence, and graduation. This position focuses on the systematic approach to supporting all members of the academic advising community through the development, implementation, and management of high-quality Professional Development and Training for Academic Advisors, advising peer mentors, and faculty mentors. The Program Director, Advising Professional Development and Training works in partnership with the Directors of Advising in the Academic Colleges, the Center for Academic Advising, the Honors College, and Student Athlete Support Services to ensure the alignment of professional development and training practices across the advising community.

This work involves close collaboration and relationships with the Directors of Academic Advising in each Academic College, the Center for Academic Advising, the Honors College, and Student Athlete Support Services. In addition to the key academic advising partners, the Program Director, Advising Professional Development and Training works closely with the Program Director, Returning and Transfer Students; Program Director, Advising Technology; the Director of the Center for Academic Advising, the SEER Directors, Center for Academic Advising Assistant Directors, Human Resources, Faculty, Faculty Senate, and the Assistant Provost’s Business Office to support all aspects of academic advising training and professional development.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Master’s degree and 5 or more years of related work experience in a university/college setting, with at least 3 years of increasing responsibility within higher education related to academic advising experience and/or other closely aligned work. A bachelor’s degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience related to training and professional development for employees or other large groups or organizations may be substituted for the advanced degree and higher education experience on an exceptional basis.
Experience in planning, executing, and leading others through complex processes connected to Professional Development and training for large groups and/or organizations.
Experience managing medium to large scale events and navigating the business needs of event planning.

Excellent interpersonal, communication, presentation & organizational skills.
Demonstrated ability to attend to details with a high degree of accuracy.
Demonstrated experience in professional development or training programs in a college or university setting.
Experience working with academic curriculum at the college or K-12 levels.
Experience effectively communicating organizational or departmental changes to teams
Experience working with faculty, staff, and students in a training and professional development capacity.
Experience using data to support program development and assessment.
Experience with software (Sharepoint, MS Teams, or other systems) to support training and professional development.
Demonstrated skill in a systems-oriented environment with demonstrated success in anticipating organizational needs.
Effectively work both independently and cooperatively in a team environment.
Strong written and oral communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, and solid organizational skills, and a strong orientation to detail.
A High degree of accuracy and excellent attention to detail.
Committed to process improvement and evaluation related to the campuswide advising community’s needs.

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Student Engagement, Enrollment, and Retention (SEER) is a functional area of the Division of Academic Affairs. SEER supports students throughout their academic career, from recruitment to graduation, to advance student success at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW). SEER includes multiple enrollment and student service areas including Admissions, Military Affairs, Registrar, Scholarships and Financial Aid, Student Athlete Support Services, Student Success Data and Research, Transfer Partnerships, Retention and Student Success, the Office of the Assistant Provost for Academic Advising, and the Center for Academic Advising (CAA).

The Office of the Assistant Provost for Academic Advising supports Academic Advising processes and systems centrally through the Provost’s office. We provide consistent and high-quality services to support strategic enrollment goals including systematic approaches to advising, the academic needs of special populations including Returning and Transfer students, Military, Early College, Pre-Professional, and First Year Spring Admit. In addition, we serve as the leader for academic advising technology resources, transfer student pathways, and campus advising and professional development. We work closely with the Academic Colleges, The Center for Academic Advising, Student Athlete Support Services, and the Honors College to support academic advising, student progression, and graduation.
College/School Information
The University College is the first academic home for over 3,000 new first-year students each year. First-year students (including select transfer and military students) are advised in the University College until they declare a major or pre-major. The University College also administers the following academic programs and courses: First Year Seminar, Academic Learning Communities, and Synergy: The UNCW Common Reading program in addition to supporting student who are interested in Pre-Health and pre-Law professions.
