Director of Student Housing and Residential Life (SHRL)
California State University Monterey Bay (Cal State Monterey Bay), a public, Hispanic-serving institution in Monterey, California, invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for its director of student housing and residential life (SHRL). The position is an in-person leadership role.

The senior director (SD) serves as the senior housing officer for student housing and residential life (SHRL) programs, services, and operations; and provides comprehensive vision, guidance, and leadership for planning, developing and implementing a student-centered residential experience serving over 3,600 residential students, with annual budget of approximately $30 million. They will supervise the SHRL leadership team, which consists of the associate directors for facilities, residential life, operations and outreach, budget and finance, and the assistant director for organizational development. Indirectly, the SD will oversee 20 additional full-time professional staff, 70 student employees in various roles, and approximately 100 resident assistants.
The salary range for this position is $145,000-$165,000.
Qualifications
A master's degree and seven years of student affairs experience in a residential university program are required. Experience at the senior housing officer level, and a doctorate in student personnel services, higher education, counseling, or a related field is preferred.
Additional experience beyond the minimum requirements, demonstrating the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above, may substitute for up to two years of education on a year-for-year basis.
The preferred candidate will have significant experience developing university student housing programs and services, experience creating and assessing learning outcomes, and general knowledge of organizational, personnel, and fiscal management.
In addition to the qualifications stated above, key stakeholders identified the following capabilities and attributes of a successful candidate:
• Demonstrated experience supervising professional staff.
• Experience developing cooperative and collaborative working relationships with individuals and groups across campuses.
• Familiar with residential student success best practices, student life, facilities, and business operations.
• Familiarity with the academic support needs of first-generation students.
• Proven ability to innovate within complex systems.
• Experience launching new programs or redesigning systems to improve student engagement and retention.
• The ability to redesign residential life models to prioritize student belonging, social integration, and holistic wellness that can measurably impact retention and engagement.
• General knowledge of organizational, personnel, and fiscal management.
• Experience with assessment of programs and activities with a focus on learning outcomes.
• The ideal candidate will have proficiency with PeopleSoft, StarRez, Maxient, and Cboard (PCS Odyssey) systems.
