Athletic Director and Chair of the Physical Education Department
Hamilton College, a highly selective residential liberal arts college in Clinton, New York, invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for its athletic director and chair of the physical education department. This is an on-site leadership role with a 2026 negotiated start date.

Chartered in 1812 after being founded in 1793 as the Hamilton-Oneida Academy, Hamilton College is among the three dozen oldest colleges in the United States. For more than 200 years, Hamilton has been preparing students for lives of meaning, purpose, and active citizenship. Their beautiful campus of more than 1,300 acres—known as College Hill—blends historic buildings and traditions with modern facilities and resources. Hamilton College’s Open Curriculum offers 44 majors (concentrations) and 58 total areas of study.

Reporting to the provost and dean of faculty, the athletic director and chair of physical education (director/chair) provides vision, strategic direction, and administrative leadership to the department. The director/chair will be a professor of physical education, a faculty position, with an extensive administrative portfolio overseeing varsity athletics, physical education curriculum, intramural programs, recreation and club sports, athletics facilities management, sports medicine, strength and conditioning, sports information, and athletic administration. The director/chair is responsible for a department comprising 29 varsity sports, over 58 full-time and part-time coaches and staff, including 21 full-time head coaches with faculty status that teach within the physical education program, over 650 student-athletes, a robust and highly engaged club sport and intramurals program, and a comprehensive overall budget of approximately $3.5 million.

The salary range is $190,000 - $225,000.

Qualifications
A master’s degree and significant, progressive leadership experience in collegiate athletics administration, including staff supervision, budget and facilities management, and sport program oversight, are required; experience in a collaborative liberal arts environment, facilities capital planning, and collegiate coaching experience are strongly preferred. The successful candidate will possess a comprehensive understanding of intercollegiate athletics administration, student-athlete development, facilities management and resourcing, NCAA compliance within a Division III environment, and the role of fundraising in supporting strategic and operational objectives.
