Position Summary
The Integrated Women’s Health Division in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Columbia University is seeking a Nurse Practitioner to join our dynamic program. The Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner (WHNP) will assist in providing compassionate, patient-centered care for women who seek routine gynecologic care. The Nurse Practitioner will also see patients both independently to develop a panel and in collaboration with other physicians in the practice. This position will be responsible for overseeing patient care in a fast-paced outpatient clinical setting and will be based out of our location in Westchester.
The Nurse Practitioner will complete patient intakes, including obtaining all pertinent demographic and clinical information from referring physicians and/or patients; providing patients with appropriate reference and resource materials; and meeting and orienting new patients. The position will responsible for assisting attending physicians with office visits and procedures for all patients as needed. Possible tasks may include but are not limited to the following: prescription call-in/refill, administer vaccines/medications, IUD and implant insertions/removals, calling patients with results, and provide care when an attending physician is unavailable
Responsibilities
Patient Care Management and Documentation
Obtains and documents subjective history (interval or comprehensive) as appropriate to chief complaint or reason for visit.
Work closely with the physicians in the Division to provide high quality, comprehensive patient care assists with in office-based procedures
Conducts relevant physical exams, documenting pertinent positive and negative findings.
Writes prescription(s) according to New York State and federal law.
Assesses and documents patient response to treatment and interventions.
Provides and documents health teaching that is oriented to the appropriate problem and/or developmentally age- appropriate health maintenance.
Consults and/or refers as per collaborative agreements/protocols. Documents same as well as documents follow up.
Direct Patient Care
Work closely with the physicians to provide high-quality, comprehensive patient care.
Develop an individual patient panel.
Track lab results to confirm that patient has had appropriate follow up.
Act as a resource for patients requesting lab results and requisitions.
Triage patient phone calls and make clinically-related follow-up calls.
Use EMR and optimize EMR functions with IT.
Medication/supply tracking/expiration date follow-up.
Quality Assurance
Conducts review of patient records in collaboration with peers and physician colleagues to determine quality and appropriateness of care provided.
Patient Safety
Administers care in accordance with safety, environmental and infectious control principles and regulations identified by the institution and legislative bodies.
Practices in accordance with legal parameters as delineated by collaborative agreement/practice protocols to include ordering and/or administering medication, intravenous fluids, blood and blood products.
Patient Rights
Demonstrates an awareness and knowledge of patient’s rights and responsibilities while receiving care within the institution.
Demonstrates knowledge of the referral mechanism when a patient believes these rights have been violated.
Education
Serves as a resource person and participates in staff development programs.
Provides patient education and counseling on health status and treatment plan.
Serves as clinical preceptor for students from selected programs.
Research Studies
Assists staff in developing appropriate quality improvement study design for potential use in research.
Participates, when appropriate, in quality improvement activities.
Participates in approved research protocols.
Evaluates and implements relevant research findings.
Coordination/Collaboration
Collaborate on clinical problems with nursing personnel, medical staff or other health care providers.
Collaborates with other members of the interdisciplinary team to determine and achieve health goals of patients and families.
Collaborates with administration and professional staff in the establishment and implementation of community services.
Other Job Duties
Treats both internal and external customers with courtesy, respect and caring behaviors.
Promotes a safe, therapeutic environment for patients, families and staff.
Acknowledges cultural differences that exist among staff and patients.
Identifies customer services needs on the unit.

Minimum Qualifications
Requires Bachelor of Science in Nursing or equivalent in education and experience, plus three years of related experience.
Master’s Degree in specialty of practice or completed alternative certification requirements for graduates of nurse practitioner programs prior to April 1, 1989.
Current NYS RN and NP Licensures.
National Certification as a Nurse Practitioner in the specialty of practice.
Basic Life Support Certification for all Nurse Practitioners who provide direct patient care.
Strong leadership, communication and interpersonal skills to direct work, drive change, interact with and effectively collaborate with patients and co-workers.
Must maintain licensure throughout employment.
Possess strong organizational skills and be detail oriented.
Excellent verbal/written communication and strong observation and listening skills.
High level of professionalism and maturity, and the ability to work independently.
Preferred Qualifications
10 years of related experience in OBGYN.
Experience with menopause care
Computer proficiency with the ability to quickly learn new applications.
