The College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences is seeking an academic advisor who has experience with and enthusiasm for supporting a diverse and growing undergraduate student population. We expect this advisor will support the Department of Political Science but could support additional departments if needed.
Reporting to the Director of Advising, the Academic Advisor serves as a full-time (calendar year) administrative and professional faculty member in the Undergraduate Academic Affairs Office within the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences. This is a hybrid position with a rotation of on-campus and remote days; some work is required in the evenings and on weekends. The role of the Academic Advisor is to assist the college in meeting its goals for supporting students through recruitment, persistence, retention, and graduation.
Required Qualifications
• A master’s degree in education, student development, counseling, higher education administration, or a related field; or, a bachelor’s degree in one or more of these fields with training and work experience at a level equivalent to an advanced degree
• Experiences in accurately applying academic policies and solving problems in a student-focused environment
• Knowledge of, familiarity with, or experience in supporting students of diverse backgrounds.
• An understanding of FERPA guidelines and the ability to practice confidentiality and discretion when working with academic records
• Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work independently and as a part of a team
Preferred Qualifications
• Knowledge of, familiarity with, or experience in one or more of the academic disciplines housed within the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences
• Academic advising experience in higher education
• Experience using student information systems, such as Banner and Navigate
• Membership in (or a modeling of the core values of) NACADA or other student-focused professional associations
