College/Department Information

 

Mentorship and Student Engagement (MSE) was established in 2018 and aims to provide education, training, and programming to foster belonging and success in the Augusta University community. Our office collaborates with departments, colleges, and student organizations to promote our Augusta University values. We advance student success and belonging through high-impact practices, targeted student success initiatives, and co-curricular engagement opportunities to build cultural competency.

Job Summary

 

The Director of Mentorship and Student Engagement provides strategic leadership for programs, services, and initiatives that promote student engagement, retention, persistence, and academic success. The Director oversees a comprehensive portfolio that includes mentorship programs, leadership development, student success initiatives, and the federally funded TRIO Student Support Services Program. The position is responsible for supervising professional and student staff, managing departmental operations and resources, fostering collaborative partnerships, and utilizing data-informed practices to enhance student outcomes. The Director also serves as a key advocate for student success by developing innovative programs, teaching leadership-focused coursework, and creating opportunities that strengthen students' sense of connection, engagement, and participation within the university community. Through strategic planning, assessment, and collaboration, the Director advances institutional priorities related to student success, engagement, and degree completion.

Responsibilities

 

The duties include, but are not limited to:

LEADERSHIP, STRATEGIC PLANNING, AND DEPARTMENT ADMINISTRATION:

Provide strategic leadership and oversight for the Office of Mentorship and Student Engagement, ensuring alignment with institutional priorities, divisional goals, and student success initiatives. 

Develop, implement, and assess departmental goals, policies, procedures, and operational practices that enhance student engagement, retention, persistence, and graduation outcomes. 

Manage the Mentorship and Student Engagement Commons and recommend the development and utilization of additional campus spaces that support student connection, engagement, and success. 

Lead strategic planning efforts utilizing institutional data, student feedback, and assessment results to guide decision-making and continuous improvement. 

Represent the office on institutional committees, task forces, and leadership groups to advance university priorities and student success initiatives. 

SUPERVISION, STAFF DEVELOPMENT, AND HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT:

Supervise and evaluate the performance of the office's Associate Director, Assistant Director, Coordinators, Administrative Assistant, and other staff. 

Establish clear expectations, performance goals, and professional development opportunities that promote staff effectiveness and career growth. 

Foster a collaborative and student-centered workplace culture that supports innovation, accountability, and excellence. 

Oversee recruitment, onboarding, training, and evaluation processes for professional and student staff within the department. 

BUDGET MANAGEMENT, MARKETING, AND EXTERNAL RELATIONS:

Provide strategic oversight of departmental budgets through responsible planning, forecasting, reconciliation, resource allocation, and financial stewardship. 

Identify and pursue external funding opportunities through fundraising initiatives and collaborative partnerships that support departmental priorities. 

Oversee all office communications, marketing, website management, publications, and social media efforts to promote programs, services, and student success initiatives. 

Develop strategic communication plans that increase awareness, participation, and engagement among students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community stakeholders. 

Cultivate collaborative partnerships with campus and community organizations to expand resources, enhance program delivery, and advance institutional goals. 

STUDENT RETENTION, MENTORSHIP, AND SUCCESS INITIATIVES:

Provide leadership and oversight for the Multicultural Mentorship Program (MMP), The Brotherhood Program, Augusta Promise initiatives, Jag for Jags, and the federally funded TRIO Student Support Services Program to support the academic success of first-generation, income-eligible students. 

Serve as Project Director for the TRIO Student Support Services Program, ensuring compliance with federal regulations, grant objectives, reporting requirements, budget management, and program assessment. 

Establish measurable outcomes and key performance indicators for student success programs and utilize assessment data to drive continuous improvement and demonstrate program effectiveness. 

Utilize qualitative and quantitative data to assess student outcomes, measure program effectiveness, and implement evidence-based strategies that enhance student success, persistence, and degree completion. 

STUDENT ENGAGEMENT, LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT, AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING:

Guide the development, implementation, and evaluation of co-curricular programs, services, and initiatives that enhance student engagement, leadership development, and campus involvement. 

Teach and develop leadership-focused curriculum through the Leadership Certificate Program and courses including Inquiry 1000, LDRS 2000, and LDRS 3000. 

Create opportunities for students to develop leadership competencies, civic engagement skills, and professional readiness through structured learning experiences. 

Collaborate with campus departments to deliver programs and initiatives that strengthen student connection, engagement, and overall student success. 

OTHER:

Perform all other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

 

Masters degree from an accredited college or university and a minimum of 5  years experience in higher education or related field.

Preferred Qualifications

 

At least 5-7 years of successful, relevant professional progressive experience in a leadership and/or supervisory role related to access, academic success, or community building in higher education. Grant-writing experience.

Excellent written communication skills, and the ability to speak to a variety of stakeholders, including students, parents, faculty, and alumni.

Shift/Salary/Benefits

 

Shift: Days; M-F (Work outside of normal business hours may be required)

Pay Band: B14

Salary: $68,500-$86,595

Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position
