Job Description

The Department of Communication in the Dodge Family College of Arts and Sciences at The University of Oklahoma invites applications for a full-time Tenure-Track Assistant Professor position in Organizational Communication. We seek an outstanding scholar who will contribute to the department’s national reputation in Organizational Communication and who has methodological expertise in quantitative, qualitative, or mixed research methods. We take a social-scientific approach to Human Communication rather than rhetorical, critical, professional, or performative ones.

The successful candidate should be an active scholar with a clearly defined program of research that can make significant theoretical contributions to the organizational communication sub-field and a demonstrated record of or strong potential for publication in refereed journals and/or books. Furthermore, the scholar’s research should help enhance the department’s program and contribute to the broader strategic vision of the Dodge Family College of Arts and Sciences and The University of Oklahoma. Interdisciplinary interests that could lead to collaborations across other departments and centers at the University are desirable, particularly if such initiatives lead to external funding that can enhance the university’s national profile. Departments and Colleges in which potential for collaboration may exist include the following: Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Price College of Business, Engineering Leadership, Women’s and Gender Studies, Sociology, Political Science, or a discipline where the scholar applies their work. Furthermore, opportunities for collaboration beyond the Norman campus include the Harold Hamm Health Campus in Oklahoma City and the University of Oklahoma-Tulsa.

The successful candidate will teach in the department’s required undergraduate course sequence and in upper-level and graduate courses in their area of interest as well as mentor graduate students. Normal duties consist of a 2-2 teaching load each academic year. The candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in organizational communication, small group communication, and related classes. The candidate will also provide service to the department, university, and discipline. The department currently includes 14 T/TT faculty, 2 RT faculty, and offers B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees to roughly 350 undergraduate students and 45 graduate students on the Norman campus. Additionally, the department supports an online master’s degree in organizational leadership with another 150 master’s students.

The Department of Communication is part of the Division of Social Sciences within the Dodge Family College of Arts and Sciences, the largest and oldest college at the University. As Oklahoma’s flagship research university, the University of Oklahoma continues to strengthen its research impact and capacity. The University recently set a record for sponsored research, and research expenditures are expected to exceed $500 million this year. Fueled by more than 70% growth in research activity over the past six years, OU now ranks among the nation’s fastest-growing research universities. Moreover, for the sixth consecutive year, this year’s incoming freshman class was the largest in state history, consisting of 6,437 students. Importantly, 37% of the incoming class are first in their families to attend college.
