Job Description

Leads and performs a variety of lab activities independently at a high and/or advanced scientific complexity level and functions as a key support to the operations and research customers. Leads and participates training of other employees of proper procedures or SOPs, maintenance of equipment or other duties and completes special projects as assigned. Advanced knowledge of protocols and guiding principles, routinely reviews or trouble shoots SOPs, may design or assist in the design of protocols and demonstrates strong problem solving skills. Creates amendments to SOPs and creates new SOPs.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for ensuring completion of assigned research projects and provides daily work oversight as well as executing  research activities. 
  • Oversees service workflow and provides consultation or other support to lab personnel, PIs, and Postdocs in executing procedures. 
  • Assists in the development and implementation of new services, and other laboratory research functions. 
  • Guides the shared laboratory resource to ensure consistent, high quality service is conducted for the research community, and responsible for unit's compliance in regard to Institute, sponsor and federal rules and regulations.
  • Plans, conducts and evaluates experiments and assays of varying complexity. 
  • May direct the work of junior employees in conducting experiments and assays.
  • Calculates, records, compiles, and reports data. Analyzes and interprets data.
  • Provides analysis and insightful interpretations of results.
  • Develops new methods or customizes protocols for users. Participates in testing of new protocols and services as appropriate for working area.  
  • Ensures client billing information is complete and accurate.
  • Compiles billing information for documenting usage and billing information into the Core's automated service tracking/billing system.
  • Develops cost analyses on services rendered by the Core. Assists in preparing cost quotes on experimental design requested by investigators.     
  •  Ensures that all work is accurately and completing documented.
  • Ensures established inventory levels, and notes usage trends so that inventory levels meet client demand. Ensures lab is prepared for service delivery (experimentation).
  • Prepares and operates equipment for experiments, assays, measurements, etc. 
  • Ensures the recommended maintenance on instrumentation and equipment is performed according to manufacturer and Institute guidelines Troubleshoots equipment problems, and mitigates the issues with training and/or repair protocols.
  • Recommends equipment improvements and/or new equipment.  Assists in the development of usage protocols for new equipment. 
  • Executes and facilitates delivery of specialized services.
  • Abides by all Institute, sponsor and federal rules and regulations.
  • Trains or assists in training of technicians and trainees including students.
  • Provides training to researchers in instrument and equipment operation.
  • Interacts with both Core Staff and clients in the planning and execution of experiments/ core services.   Advises Principal Investigators as appropriate. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific field. 
  • Masters in a relevant scientific field preferred.
  • Master's Degree in a scientific-related field may substitute for four years of experience. 
  • Ten years of directly related experience may substitute for degree requirements.

Certifications:

  • Certification in appropriate field may be required per department or core protocol within one year of hire.

Complexity of Work:

  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Work Experience:

  • Six years of experience required. Master's Degree in an appropriate scientific field may substitute for 4 years' experience. Ten years' directly related experience may substitute for all degree requirements.

Physical Requirements:

  • May be exposed to hazardous biological, vaporous and odorous materials
  • Manual and visual dexterity required.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Continuous lifting, standing and walking.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.

Pay Range

Minimum hourly: $25.13

Maximum hourly: $38.33
