Established in 1829, the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, or BMB, is an academic home to interdisciplinary translational research for disease detection, prevention, and treatment. The research mission is focused on inventing better diagnostics and newer targeted therapies for the benign and malignant diseases of the bladder, brain, breast, eye, gastrointestinal tract, kidney, liver, and prostate. The research areas encompass biomarkers, chemoprevention, DNA damage and repair, drug resistance, the epigenome, immunotherapy, the microbiome, molecular signaling, natural products, protein modifications and targeted therapy. Our faculties are supported by major funding agencies, and the insight gained by their work has been published in reputable peer-reviewed journals.

Job Summary

A training position designed to learn through engagement in an advanced level of scientific technical and administrative work in support of research efforts in the laboratory, focused on diagnostics and targeted therapies for benign and malignant diseases. The duties include but are not limited to participating in research data collection and documentation within relevant guidelines and protocols; developing and evaluating new research techniques and procedures; publishing results in scientific journals; performing a variety of complex chemical, biological, microscopic, histologic, surgical, clinical, immunological, statistical/computational and dissection procedures; and other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

The duties include, but are not limited to:

Participate in project planning and development of research protocols while ensuring adherence to accepted scientific research principles and compliance with relevant federal guidelines.

Analyze results of experiments and procedures using manual or computer techniques and, if necessary, develop special computer programs to facilitate analysis. Teach and participate in complex bacteriological, chemical and/or radio-chemical qualitative and quantitative analysis, genetic, macro-, and micro-serological, histologic and cell culture procedures.

Coordinate and participate in research of scientific literature; summarize and evaluate findings; develop derivative applications of techniques developed by own research activities or reported by other research projects. Presents findings at scientific meetings locally, nationally, and internationally.

Compose articles for publication in scientific journals; review articles prepared by others.

Supervise and coordinate activities of students, graduate assistants and other research personnel engaged in research activities and/or related laboratory work. Advise principal investigators, other postdocs, students and other research personnel on research techniques, procedures, and other technological aspects of research activities.

Calibrate, troubleshoot, repair, and operate microscopes, computer-linked analytical equipment, dedicated computers, and other complex scientific equipment; instruct others in operation of equipment.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Ph.D. degree from an accredited college or university

Preferred Qualifications

This position is for conducting translational research in cancer and benign diseases related to bladder, prostate, and kidney. The projects involve exploration of novel combination treatments for chemotherapy resistant bladder cancer, developing new biomarkers and tests to predict treatment response, and outcome. Another project is related to investigation of novel molecular drivers of inflammation-induced prostatic hyperplasia, fibrosis, and immune cell infiltration and a treatment for BPH. The position offers opportunities to conduct bench-to-bedside research that involves routine cell and molecular biology, preclinical models, RNA-seq, including single cell RNA-seq (immune cell profiling) and bioinformatics.

Accordingly, the ideal candidate must demonstrate:

• Hands-on experience with several of the following techniques: animal models of cancer, including orthotropic implant, xenograft, PDX, and syngeneic mouse models, drug delivery, necropsy, and preparation for histology.
• Hands-on experience in advanced molecular biology and cellular signaling techniques.
• Experience with biochemistry routine techniques (real time PCR, primer design, cloning, DNA methylation, methylation PCR), ELISA, immunoblot, cell culture assays, immunocytochemistry, and immunohistochemistry.
• Familiarity with RNA-seq, scRNA-seq, immune cell profiling and bioinformatics is highly desirable.
• Proficiency in oral and written communication in English is required.
• Experience with writing/editing of manuscripts and research plans is highly desirable.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

KNOWLEDGE: Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases. Knowledge of the following techniques: animal models of cancer, including orthotropic implant, xenograft, PDX, and syngeneic mouse models, drug delivery, necropsy, and preparation for histology; advanced molecular biology and cellular signaling techniques; biochemistry routine techniques (real time PCR, primer design, cloning, DNA methylation, methylation PCR), ELISA, immunoblot, cell culture assays, immunocytochemistry, and immunohistochemistry). Knowledge of RNA-seq, scRNA-seq, immune cell profiling and bioinformatics is highly desirable.

SKILLS: Proficient interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills in English.

Shift/Salary/Benefits

Shift: Days; Monday - Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required)

Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position.
